A Plot: Saving Iris

Last night’s night’s episode was focused mostly on the main plot of defeating Savitar and saving Iris. While there were some brief moments between HR and Tracy and Joe and Iris, the rest of the episode involved stealing some Dominator tech left behind from this season’s earlier crossover event while also hiding Iris from Savitar. This is the exact type of penultimate episode I want to see. It’s not that I don’t love the side stories these writers throw at us, especially when they’re so good at telling a b-plot and c-plot story without distracting from that main focus, but this was the time to get things moving along.

I had a feeling this episode would end with the showdown between Team Flash and Savitar but I was worried when the ARGUS heist was brought into the mix. While it was an important element to the main arc, I was worried that it would be too long and drawn out to get to that fateful showdown this week. Nothing could be further from the truth. The heist was relatively short and sweet while managing to not feel too rushed. The return of Captain Cold was also a welcome touch as it made for some nice comic relief in an otherwise bleak episode.

Can it Really Be True?

So, how about that ending? Like me, many of you are up in the air on whether or not Iris was really killed. I thought the show set up several possibilities in this episode. The obvious one is that she’s actually dead and gone and never coming back. Another possibility is that HR was using the face-altering technology to take the place of Iris. It’s a little suspicous that that particular piece of tech was brought back after being absent for most of the season. Another possiblity is that Barry will fix the Flashpoint timeline and return everything back to the way it was before. Barry mentioning baby Sarah to Lyla tonight was almost a reminder to the audience that Team Flash is still living in that altered timeline.

I’ve been saying for weeks that I think everything gets reset at the end when Barry comes up with a way to fix the Flashpoint timeline. However, I don’t think it happens in next week’s finale. I think this season ends on a pretty somber note and then right before the end credit comes, I think Barry will announce that fixing Flashpoint is the only thing he can think to do. Then he’ll run off, lighting flashing in his trail, as the season comes to a close. I just can’t fathom the thought that Iris actually died for real. But, we shall find out soon enough.
