WARNING: There are spoilers ahead for the latest episode of Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD.
A Plot: The Darkhold
This episode featured the much-anticipated return of Patton Oswalt as all the Koenigs (well, almost all of them as we also met a sister named LT Koenig). As with most weeks that heavily feature Oswalt, it was lighter than most of this season’s other episodes. I love that Coulson entrusted Billy to hide the Darkhold and then the rest of the Koenigs turned it into a game of hot potato. That’s the kind of levity that’s been missing with this season’s more serious tones.
As for the actual main plot of the episode, plenty of things got moving along. We finally met The Superior, who’s a big Russian Luddite brute; Fitz, Simmons, and Mack literally dug into the Radcliffe LMD and discovered an impossible brain; and the team learned that the May they’ve been trusting for weeks is also an LMD. It was a solid episode, and then we got some icing on the cake in the end when we learned that Coulson is the real target of the Superior.
B Plot: The Darkhold
The Darkhold is really becoming like a magnet that brings all the plots together. It was essential to the Ghost Rider story in the first half of this season, it’s driving the LMD story, and now it’s also driving the Inhumans vs. Watchdogs story. It’s unclear exactly how the book will destroy the Inhumans but I’m sure that will be explained later. For now, the Darkhold will just serve as the Maguffin for everyone and everything.
C Plot: Fitz and His Dad
One thing we rarely get on this show is the personal backstories of characters. We’ve learned a bit about Daisy, Ward, and May but that’s about it. Now we learned that Fitz had an emotionally abusive dad growing up. That’s incredibly sad to learn, especially coming off last week’s revelation that Mack lost a baby daughter. We didn’t learn what message Fitz’s dad had for him, so hopefully we revisit this soon.
Thanks for reading!
