WARNING: There are spoilers ahead for the latest episode of Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD.
Fitz and Simmons
It seems like forever since I’ve had anything to say about Fitz and Simmons. I feel like, for the most part, they’ve been kept in the background for the second half of this season. When the writers did focus on them, it was the will-they-won’t-they-wait-I-thought-they-already-did storyline that was getting repetitive. Now they’ve gotten back into the fray and it was some classic FitzSimmons action that we have not seen for a long time. Given the nature of the threat, I figured it wouldn’t be long before we saw them. A killer parasite, no matter how much of a humanoid it is, really sounds like a job for two scientists. Hopefully, now that Fitz and Simmons have become more actively involved we will see more of them.
Does anyone really think this is the end of Hydra? If so then it was pretty anticlimactic. It’s also confusing considering we know at least two Hydra characters, Crossbones and Baron Zemo, will be featured in Captain America: Civil War. It feels like Hydra has been destroyed and resurrected more times than any Marvel character. Now it looks like it will happen again. While it’s become more interesting this year now that’s it’s backstory has been interwined with the Inhumans, I still won’t be upset if Hydra goes away forever, which is why I’m setting myself up for the disappointment of its umpteenth resurrection.
Coulson and Daisy
We’ve known for some time that Coulson harboured some paternal feelings for Skye/Daisy, but this may have been the first time those feelings were specifically vocalized on the show. Moving ahead, it will be interesting to see what kind of dark paths Coulson is willing to go down to save Daisy. I feel like he’s become more ruthless this half-season, so maybe the writers are setting him up for a dark conclusion. I don’t know what can be more dark than caving Grant Ward’s chest in, but that’s what makes it exciting.
Fitz and Simmons getting caught by Dr. Radcliffe led to a pretty tense moment. My favorite part of this scene, and the episode, was Fitz stomping on the foot of Radcliffe’s bodyguard and then knocking him out with the briefcase. Fitz can be quite the bad ass when he wants to be and I certainly wouldn’t complain if we got to see this side of him more often.
