Arrow Thoughts: S4 EP13 “Sins of the Father”

By: Annie Shean (@Isaymeow)

WARNING: There are spoilers ahead for the latest episode of Arrow

As the title implies this episode focus’s on the effects the sins of fathers have on the characters of Arrow. Ra’s Al Ghul, Malcolm Merlyn, and Felicity’s father are all central players in this weeks struggle.

A Struggle for Power:
What’s the best way to solve your problem of becoming the rightful heir to the league of assassins? Oh how about you just offer up a cure called “the lotus” to save Oliver’s sister in exchange for Malcolm Merlyn’s life. Well, at least that is Nyssa’s way of thinking.

Despite protests from his comrades, he looks to negotiate a truce between Nyssa and Merlyn; however as expected a fight ensues instead that pours out onto the public streets in Star City. (As if Darhk wasn’t enough, now they have the LOA fighting). The fight came to a stop when the Green Arrow, Black Canary, and Spartan were able to shoot Nyssa with a tranquilizer.

Laurel decides to have a heart to heart with Nyssa and explain that she two is still trapped by her own problems with her dearly departed father. This leads to Nyssa to make a stunning twist at the end.

The Calculator / Noah Kuttler
While meeting over coffee Felicity’s father decides to come right out and admit he’s the Calculator, and that he knows she is Overwatch. He says that their Vigilante work is what they have in common, but Felicity disagrees; She is trying to save the city while her father threatened it.

Felicity talks to her mother, who very bluntly states that people don’t change no matter how much you want them to. She warns her daughter not to trust Noah, and that he only tells people what they want to hear. This leads Felicity to set a trap for him to see if she can trust him or not; he fails miserably. At the end of the episode Felicity turns over her father to the police, but I doubt this is the last time we’ve seen ‘papa’ Kuttler.

The Final Battle
Oliver encourages Nyssa and Merlyn to settle things in a one-on-one fight, the way things are usually handled in the league. Just when she is about to take him on, Oliver steps in to “fight for his wife” in her place. She hesitates, but lets him which allows h er to live. Oliver easily overpowers Merlyn, and when Merlyn refuses to give up the ring Oliver chops off his hand rather than kill him. Once Nyssa has the ring she hands over the Lotus, saving Thea and permanently curing her bloodlust.

Nyssa choses to melt the ring and disband the League of Assassins, freeing everyone including herself from her fathers previous grip. This will allow her to have a fresh start elsewhere, and it closes the chapter on the LOA. However not everything is so peachy afterwords, Merlyn and Oliver are now back at odds with each other.

Stripped of his power  and furious over what he has lost, Merlyn visits Damien Darhk and tells him that Oliver has a son named William. It’s only a matter of time before our favorite villain will use that against Oliver.

Miscellaneous Odds & Ends

The island storyline felt a bit rushed on Taiana’s forgiveness of Oliver, but it seems we will finally see what Reiter has been searching for soon. I know that this flashback sequence will eventually tie into the current situation, but I feel that this storyline is weak and uninteresting (sans the Constantine moments of coarse).

We also see happy moment where Oliver asks Felicity what they are waiting for, so she decides to start planning a small ‘friends’ wedding. However the real question is how will Felicity learn of his son, and what long term effects will that have on their relationship?

Thanks for reading, and I look forward to sharing more Arrow chatter with you all in the upcoming weeks!
